Chilled Water Systems

  • Health System Chilled Water loop - (12,950 tons): This loop serves buildings in the Health System and parts of Central Grounds to Jefferson Park Avenue (JPA).Buildings Served
    • North Plant - Four of the chillers due to 1987 and use R-11. Chiller 5, installed in 1992, uses R-11, but is optimized for R-123. Chillers 6 and 7 were installed in 1995 and operate with R-123.
    • South Plant - Chiller 1 uses R 134a and dates to 2002, along with the TES. Two 1500 ton chillers being installed in the summer of 2003 will use R-123.
  • McCormick Road Chilled Water Loop - (7,600 tons): This loop serves West Grounds, which is the area between Emmett Street and Alderman Road.Buildings Served
    • Olsson Hall Plant - Two 500 ton units and one 600 ton unit are located in here and date to the early 1970’s. The 500 ton units use R-12 and were built in 1976. The 600 ton unit uses R-11 and was built in 1981.
    • Chemistry Addition Plant - Three 1200 ton units. One of the 1200 chillers in Chemistry Addition was installed in 1996. The two other 1200 ton units were commissioned in 1998.
    • Aquatics & Fitness Center Addition Plant - Under Construction. The AFC Addition is designed to house five 1200 ton units.
  • Central Grounds Chilled Water Loop - (3,500 tons): This loop serves buildings in the Health System and Central Grounds.Buildings Served
    • Bryan Hall Plant - One 500 ton chiller, installed in 1994 is an electric driven centrifugal chiller that uses R-123.
    • Clark Hall Addition Plant - Two 1200-ton electrical chillers were installed in 2002. They use 123 refrigerant.
  • Newcomb Road Chilled Water Loop - (2,200 tons): This loop serves buildings along Newcomb Road including Alderman Library, Special Collections Library, Newcomb Hall, VMonroe Hill College, and The Bookstore.Buildings Served
    • Alderman Library Plant - Two 250 ton units are in Alderman and date to 1983.
    • Clemons Library Plant - One 300 ton unit is in Clemons Library and dates to 1981.
    • Newcomb Hall Plant - Two 700 ton units are in Newcomb. One of the Newcomb chillers is R-500 and one is R134a.
  • North Grounds Chilled Water Plant - (1,600 tons): The N. Grounds plant serves the North Grounds precinct, which includes JAG, and Law. Buildings Served
  • Carr's Hill Chilled Water Loop - (1,200 tons): is responsible for buildings in the Carr's Hill area. Buildings Served
  • Hereford Plant - (350 tons): is responsible for buildings at Hereford College, including Runk Dining Hall. Buildings Served
