UVA Recycling Back Site
At the UVA Recycling Back Site, material that has been collected around Grounds is sorted and shipped, some sent away in bins and some baled first.
The back site is located beyond the UVA Recycling office at the end of Leake Drive which is parallel
to McCormick across from Alderman Dorms.
After being sorted, containers are crushed into a bale with our baler, a larger size one that we upgraded to in 2007.
Bales of steel, aluminum, and plastic. Steel bales average about 820 lbs., aluminum bales about 400 lbs., and plastic bales about 660 lbs.
Our new cardboard packer truck (obtained October 2008), compresses the cardboard collected at most buildings on grounds at an average rate of 2.5 to 3 tons per day. It runs on biodiesel, like the rest of our fleet.

collected during move-in weekend.
After it has been sorted from the other Used Beverage Containers (UBC), the commingled
glass is sent to a processor.
