Recycling

Behind the Scenes

Reuse

At the end of every school year, we collect reusable items for charities through Chuck it for Charity. We have a Reusable Office Supply Exchange (ROSE) where anyone from UVA can donate reusable supplies and pick them up for free at our office on Leake Drive. Reusable medical supplies are sent from the UVA Hospital to areas of need in Charlottesville and around the world through the MERCI program.

Recycle

UVA Recycling collects materials from residential areas, academic buildings, and other areas around Grounds such as the UVA Hospital. We collect Used Beverage Containers (UBC) made of aluminum, glass, steel, and all numbers of plastic, which includes material other than beverage containers. We collect different grades of paper. We collect electronics at Newcomb Hall.

Processing

We sort the materials collected from around Grounds at the UVA Recycling Back Site. The aluminum, steel, plastic, cardboard, and paper are sent to a processor, Sonoco Recycling. After Sonoco Recycling, various buyers use the material to make new recycled products. The glass is shipped to the Fluvanna Landfill where it is crushed and used to cover the site. We are currently looking into alternatives for glass recycling. The scrap metal is sent to Coiners for processing. The electronics are sent to Alternative Community Training Recycling (ACT).
