Recycling

How to Recycle

Academic/Administrative:

Paper

In the administrative areas, we collect paper in two gradesÑwhite and mixed. We also collect cardboard, which should be broken down and placed next to other recycling containers. Put the sorted paper into boxes at your desk, and when your box is full, bring it to a Mobile Shelf System. We empty these shelves once a week in most cases.

In academic buildings, we collect mixed paper in bins like the one shown below.

Used Beverage Containers (UBC)

We collect beverage containers made of glass, aluminum, steel, and all numbers of plastic except Styrofoam. If you can, please rinse the bottles, or at least empty them, and remove the caps. Place these recyclables in containers like the one shown below. We also accept plastic bags.

Dorm/Residential:

In the first-year and upper-class housing on Grounds, students use a 2-sort container (below) in their dorm rooms. These containers can be found outside next to trash and recycling bins. Contact UVA Recycling at (434) 982-5050 or e-mail recycle@virginia.edu if there are none left in the area. Glass, aluminum, steel, all numbers of plastic except Styrofoam, and plastic bags go in one side, and mixed paper belongs in the other. Used Beverage Containers (UBCs) should be emptied and rinsed if possible. The caps are not recyclable and should be removed. Two-sorts are emptied at the recycling bins outside residence halls near the trash containers. Cardboard can also be broken down and placed next to these containers.

Electronics

We accept CDs, DVDs, Jewel Cases, Floppy Disks, VHS tapes, cell phones, and used ink cartridges. The drop off box for electronics is located on the second floor of Newcomb Hall near the computers (below). We cannot accept University-licensed software. For more information on how to recycle larger items, such as monitors and printers, please call (434) 982-5050 or e-mail recycle@virginia.edu. The Surplus Property System handles University property. To donate or recycle personal items, contact Goodwill Industries or Crutchfield electronics recycling.
