Apply to be a Conservation Advocate!

Apply to be a Conservation Advocate with UVa Sustainability! We need CAs for all first-year dorms and as many upper-class dorms as possible, so if you live on-Grounds, you can apply! CAs meet with us every other week, and educate their residents on sustainability issues throughout the school year. See link for more information, and the application.
Conservation Advocate Application 2009-2010

Overview and History

UVA Recycling first implemented the Recycling Coordinator Program in the fall of 2000. It is now called the "Conservation Advocacy Program" in order to emphasize that other conservation and sustainability issues are addressed beyond recycling. The Conservation Advocates (CAs) are selected by UVA Sustainability. There is a CA for each first-year residence hall and many upperclass housing areas.

CAs serve as liaisons between the student body and UVA Sustainability. They attend the weekly House or Area Council meetings held in their residence in order to disseminate information and announcements from UVA Sustainability, as well as to collect concerns and questions regarding recycling and conservation issues from their fellow residents. Additionally, CAs are responsible for monitoring the use of 2-sort recycling bins in their dorms, making sure that they are being used and emptied properly. They also attend bi-weekly meetings held with the UVA Sustainability Outreach Coordinator.

CAs are involved with several University conservation outreach events and programs throughout the school year. These events include contests and educational efforts for America Recycles Day and Earth Day, as well as UVA Sustainability programs such as "Chuck It For Charity," Claim your Can contest, and the Dorm Energy Challenge. CAs also spend a few hours each semester working at the UVA Recycling 'back site'. They help to sort the material that their peers have tossed into the recycling bins and, in the process, gain a better understanding of the continued need for recycling education on grounds.
